Bumper crop of new books

23rd January 2018 by Graham Taylor

IN ADDITION TO a sparkling collection of new books and DVDs added to the shelves since the start of the New Year, we will soon be taking delivery of titles selected from the Richard and Judy Spring 2018 collection, adding some old favourites as well as some new and exciting authors.

In the meantime, here’s a bumper crop of New Year books and DVDs to be going on with.

The Spy

by Paulo Coelho

WHEN MATA HARI arrived in Paris, she was penniless. Soon she was feted as the most elegant woman in the city, a dancer who shocked and delighted audiences.

As a confidante and courtesan she bewitched the era’s most powerful men. But as paranoia consumed a country at war, Mata Hari’s lifestyle brought her under suspicion.

In 1917 she was arrested in her hotel room on the Champs-Elysees and accused of espionage. Told in Mata Hari’s voice through her final letter, this is the unforgettable story of a woman who dared to break the conventions of her time, and paid the ultimate price.

A Summer At Sea

by Katie Fforde

ON BOARD A PUFFER BOAT in the Western Isles of Scotland, Emily is spending an idyllic summer at sea. But it’s only a summer, and Emily knows that soon she must return to her single life and her career in town as a midwife.

However, she has not counted on the friends she is making. Or the fun she is having. Or the attraction she is starting to feel for Alastair, the handsome local doctor…

The Hanging Club

by Tony Parsons

A BAND OF VIGILANTE EXECUTIONERS roam London’s hot summer nights, abducting evil men and hanging them until dead. The gang member who abused vulnerable girls. The wealthy drunk driver who mowed down a child. The hate preacher calling for the murder of British soldiers.

As the bodies pile up and riots explode across the sweltering city, DC Max Wolfe hunts a gang of killers who many believe to be heroes. He discovers that the lust for revenge starts very close to home…

Secrets Of A Happy Marriage

by Cathy Kelly

Jojo, Bess’s stepdaughter, has a point to make: Bess has swept into her father’s life but she won’t ever replace Jojo’s late beloved mother. Cousin Cari is a strong career woman who isn’t unnerved by anything – apart from facing the man who left her at the altar… and he’s on the guest list.

As the party brings them all together, can the Brannigans discover the secrets of a happy marriage before it’s too late.

Lilla’s Feast

by Frances Osborne

THIS TRUE STORY sees Lilla Eckford interned in a Japanese civilian camp in China during the Second World War after an extraordinary early life.

She used her time there to compile a book about the joys of food. This precious cookery book, now in the possession of the Imperial War Museum, inspired Lilla’s great-granddaughter, Frances Osborne, to investigate her enthralling story.

A wonderfully inspiring book, a partial history of the British Empire in the Far East, perfectly captures the story of a generation of women.

Out Of Bounds

by Val Mcdermind

WHEN A TEENAGER JOYRIDER crashes a stolen car, a routine DNA test could be the key to unlocking the mystery of a 20-year-old murder inquiry.

Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pirie is an expert at solving the unsolvable. With each cold case closed, justice is served. So, finding the answer should be straightforward, but it’s as twisted as the DNA helix itself.

Meanwhile, Karen finds herself irresistibly drawn to another case, one that she has no businesses investigating. And as she pieces together decades-old evidence, Karen discovers the most dangerous kind of secrets. Secrets that someone is willing to kill for…
