Oldman masters the Churchill effect
THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED account of Winston Churchill’s early days as Prime Minister, as the Nazi armies swept all before them in their march across Western Europe, is the subject of our next Film Club showing on Thursday, June 28.
Darkest Hour tells how the mounting threat of invasion and imminent defeat for Britain in the early months of World War Two led to friction at the highest levels of government between those who wanted peace with Hitler at any cost and Churchill, who flatly refused to even consider such an approach.
Gary Oldman’s brilliant portrayal of the wartime leader deservedly earned him a 2018 Best Actor Academy Award, a performance that truly makes Darkest Hour a must-see film.
As always, Film Club screenings are strictly for members only and there is no charge for admission. There is, however, a small charge for refreshments, which will be available during the interval.

Consular talks on post-Brexit rights
A HIGH-RANKING TEAM from the British Consul will address a meeting at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz on the subject of ‘British Citizens’ Rights’ on Thursday, July 5th, starting at 11am.
Charmaine Arbouin, British Consul for Andalusia and the Canaries, will give a short talk followed by a question and answer session addressing issues arising from the British government’s ongoing Brexit negotiations.
She will be accompanied by Helen Diaz de Arcaya Keating, British Vice Consul for the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Penelope Gomez, Consular Officer.
The meeting is open to all those who wish to attend and is not restricted solely to Library members. However, it would help organisers planning for the event to know how many are likely to attend so either leave your name at the Library treasurer’s desk, send message via the Library’s Facebook page or email [email protected].
There will be no charge and the event is open to all.
